It takes a certain kind of person to live above 9,000 feet — resilient, thick-skinned, resourceful. But even the toughest among us can have their armor pierced by hateful acts.
Unknown suspects carved a swastika and a racial epithet on the door of an African-American man's condominium at St. Mary's on Oct. 29.
Brock Cureton contacted the sheriff’s department two weeks ago after finding the Nazi symbol on his door. On Nov. 17, Cureton found the words "Die n-----" carved above the swastika.
Both the FBI and the Clear Creek Sheriff's Office are investigating. Clear Creek sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Gremillion would not comment on the case because it is under investigation, and the FBI did not return a call for comment.
"The FBI told me to call back if something happens," Cureton said. "I don't want to wait until something else happens."

No place like home
Cureton has lived in St. Mary's for 19 years and has experienced racial hate to this degree only one other time. In July 2002, a neighbor displayed a Confederate flag and a noose in front of his apartment. The story made national news.
"When that happened, residents from all over the county came and apologized to me," Cureton said. "The folks up here are great, and I endure because I get to live in this wonderful place where most people only get to visit."
The 51-year-old Seattle transplant is soft spoken and prefers to keep to himself. In the ‘80s, he was working in Idaho Springs and commuting from east Denver. A friend drove him up Fall River Road one February day, and the antique radio collector has never looked back.
"Most people drive up that road when it’s sunny and warm," Cureton said. "Not me — it was snowy and bitter cold. Living in Seattle, where it only snows five or six times a year, I've always had a fetish for snow. I fell in love."
Cureton works in the credit and financing industry and spends most of his time in Denver. He volunteers in Five Points to help steer youths away from a life of crime and has a large circle of friends in Denver. He also restores and sells old Studebakers, which he keeps in Broomfield. But despite building a life down the hill, nothing brings Cureton more peace than coming home.
"I keep my soul-touching experiences in Denver," Cureton said. "This, up here, I keep this as my sanctuary."
For Paul Johnson, to know Cureton is to like Cureton.
"I only hope all are as upset and disgusted as I am about this situation," Johnson said. "Unbelievable, truly unbelievable." Johnson started a forum about the incident at www.timberlinetalk.com and asked residents to encourage the sheriff's department to continue the investigation.
Both Johnson and Cureton have an idea about who perpetrated the crime, but without a witness, charges are unlikely.
Cureton said he is proud of his black heritage but doesn’t “wear his color on his sleeve."
"I learned a long time ago I can't fight the civil rights movement alone," Cureton said. "I used to get angry; now I just brush it off." Or, often, laugh it off. Behind his large physique is an equally sizable sense of humor.
At the Placer Inn in the ‘80s, a man asked Cureton how he could live at St. Mary's without his lips exploding.
"He was dead serious," Cureton said. "I said, 'You know, my lips are still intact.’ I just fell out of my chair laughing — we all did. I never have forgotten the exploding lips."
And while Cureton will not likely forget the recent incident, one prevailing image keeps him returning to St. Mary's.
"I've envisioned myself living in Five Points or Montebello," Cureton said. "But when I turn up that road and see the snow-covered mountains, I don't know, this is home."
